Building Services Consultancy of the Year
Key cornerstones of AECOM's philosophy are robust environmental management and the implementation of sound sustainability principles, and the company has held the Environmental Management standard ISO 14001 since 1995.
AECOM contributes to a number of ‘go-to’ reference books and to CIBSE publications and other guides, including the industry recognised Faber & Kell, as well as writing many guidance documents that actively seek to exceed the minimum acceptable design standards, and project-specific design guides for inclusion in contractor tender packages.
The company has carried out a range of government-led initiatives including advising government on Part L of the Building Regulations (Conservation of Fuel and Power) and on the implementation of the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive in the UK. It co-developed the original BREEAM scheme in the early 1990s and is a founding member of the original Soft Landings Task Group. Always at the forefront of new technology, AECOM has developed industry-standard design applications, including the Apache, Indus, Pisces and Taps software packages, as well as pioneering building information modelling (BIM). ADAPT, AECOM's design and productivity toolkit, includes a carbon assessment tool, an automated design software programme and a standard calculations suite. This approach has enabled landmark projects such as Greenwatt Way, using the latest construction methods and technologies to deliver zero-carbon housing, and the Air Chairs ‘seats of cool' displacement ventilation solution for the new San José International Airport terminal building in California.
Its evolving environmental management system has recently included the benchmarking of carbon emissions and an improvement programme that includes initiatives to reduce the impacts of travel. AECOM provides extensive support in the delivery of successful carbon management programmes, and low-carbon and low-energy buildings, including the European Investment Bank, Luxembourg – the first BREEAM excellent project outside of the UK – and KPMG, London (BCO Award for Best Corporate Workplace).
