University of Bradford

Creating a low-carbon estate at the University of Bradford has been a pivotal part of its “ecoversity” sustainability programme since 2005. So far, overall carbon footprint has reduced by 8% and has reversed a rising trend; the target is to achieve 50% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2020 against a 2005 baseline.

Major new building projects undertaken since 2005 include a new 1,000-bed student hall and the creation of an indoor circulation space by enclosing an old car park. One project was used to develop a sustainable building specification which is now used on all construction projects on the campus.

Recent major refurbishment works include a sports centre – previously the university's largest carbon-emitting building per meter. The main student social space has been completely reconstructed within the shell of the building. The refurbishment of the main campus building involved recladding to enhance the visual impact of the building and also to improve the thermal performance, reducing heating demand. Increasing the efficiency of the building stock has been achieved by making more effective use of the BMS, leading to a significant drop in the DEC ratings across the estate
( environment/ performance/- buildingdata/). A CHP unit has been installed on the main campus, resulting in a 19% cut in carbon emissions. Current renewable technologies include biomass boilers, solar PV, solar water heating and rainwater harvesting, with plans for the use of ground source heating and wind power. A travel plan and working group support the reduction of carbon of both commuting and business travel, while biodiversity projects support conservation.

Users have been involved through behavioural initiatives such as an environmental award scheme for departments; the use of metering to enable green impact teams to manage their energy use; and, when departments move to a new space, by providing a detailed introduction to green features.
