With a world-famous food hall comprising hundreds of cold rooms and display cases, the department store sought a new refrigeration system that was safe, energy efficient, environmentally friendly, robust and resilient. It therefore collaborated with a seven-partner team over an 18-month period to find a solution.
It became apparent that the commonly used HFC refrigerants would come under increasing pressure due to their high global warming potential. A carbon dioxide refrigerant operating as a transcritical installation was a proven alternative, with examples of successful installations in operation elsewhere in Europe. Field visits to sites were undertaken to establish the viability of the system.
