Contractor of the Year

A major redevelopment project at Anglia Ruskin University, located within Cambridge City Centre, split the campus in two and was carried out while the university remained fully operational.

This was the most ambitious project ever undertaken by the university and the team was highly commended for demonstrating a positive and proactive approach to successfully meeting all of the challenges presented.
VolkerFitzpatrick was the main contractor and Cunnington Clark the building services consultant. Imtech Aqua was appointed as the design-and-build mechanical and electrical services contractor following a robust, single-stage tender process that included a comprehensive value engineering process which generated in excess of £400,000 of potential savings.

Planning requirements dictated that 10% of the building’s energy should be generated through renewable technologies and this formed a key element of the ongoing design philosophy, which provided a continuing focus throughout the selection and procurement process. Technologies integrated into the design include: combined heat and power; solar PV; LED lighting; and Passivent, interlinked with the BMS to provide nighttime cooling.
As a result, the project achieved a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating, in line with the client’s aspirations. As part of the team’s enhanced offering to the client it identified and offered fully costed proposals for the building to attain a BREEAM 'excellent' rating.

Key collaborative initiatives used included: a collaborative 3D coordination model which identified pinch points in coordination and builders' work planning; the presentation of value engineering options using a ‘traffic light’ system to highlight areas of opportunity; the co-location of the main contractor and key trade contractors in the same project office; and early involvement and integration of the supply chain.

The collaborative approach continued from the completion of the installation, through commissioning and into the soft landing phase.
