Meet the Engineers: Jeff House

Jeff House

Applications Manager
Baxi Commercial Division

Why did you choose Building services engineering?
A school friend was involved in his family business during holidays, helping to prepare tender and O&M documentation for mechanical services schemes.  I was undecided on my career aspirations at the time but enjoyed tinkering with computers and CAD. Through my friend I developed an interest in building services; I then decided topursue a career in the field.
17 years later I still find day today work in the building services sector interesting, challenging and rewarding.
What were your favourite subjects at school?
It was a long time ago! I did enjoy English, business studies and combined sciences in particular.
What was your route into Building services?
Following GCSE's I became an apprentice mechanical design engineer at a consultancy in Birmingham. During this time I studied for and successfully completed ONC and HNC qualifications in Building Services Engineering whilst cutting my teeth working on some high profile commercial projects.
What do you enjoy most about your current job or studies?
Working as Applications Manager for Baxi Commercial Division I most enjoy the diversity of challenges encountered on a day to day basis; no two days are the same!
I am actively involved in providing low to zero carbon solutions on commercial projects, both retro-fit and new build, assisting with design and in addition I have the opportunity to sit on industry working groups and advisory committees regarding forthcoming Building Regulations and EU directives which proves very interesting.
What are your future plans and aspirations?
I would like to progress to a director’s position within my current organisation and to continue being at the cutting edge of innovation with regard to low carbon technology.
Why do you think it is important to belong to CIBSE?
For me CIBSE membership represents an official recognition of the values I hold true and work by; professionalism, honesty, integrity and expertise.
I believe CIBSE membership commands trust and respect within the industry, providing clients and project team members with peace of mind and confirmation that they are dealing with a bona fide building services professional.
