CIBSE support for research

Process for the submission and approval of funding for research proposals

Proposers should first consult the published CIBSE knowledge priority areas and make sure that their proposed project fits with CIBSE's strategic priorities. They should then contact CIBSE's Research Manager to discuss the proposed project.

With guidance from the Research Manager, the proposer completes the Research Funding Approval Request form (RP/1). The Research Manager will submit the completed request to the next scheduled Knowledge Management Committee (KMC) meeting. KMC will review the request and evaluate it based on:

  • Relevance to the CIBSE knowledge priority areas.
  • Clear deliverables for CIBSE, its members and the wider industry.
  • Availability of funds in the Research Fund.
  • Track record of the proposer.

The Research Manager will respond to the proposer, normally within a week of the KMC meeting, with results and feedback on their submission.

Process for requesting Letters of Commitment for research proposals

Proposers should consult the published CIBSE knowledge priority areas and make sure that their proposed project fits with CIBSE's strategic priorities. The proposer should contact CIBSE's Research Manager and discuss the proposed project and CIBSE’s involvement and contribution. This will need to take place while the project is still at concept stage, and not in the final two weeks of preparation when the proposal is being finalised.

The Research Manager will evaluate the proposed project based on:

  • Relevance to the CIBSE knowledge priority areas.
  • Clear deliverables for CIBSE, its members and the wider industry.
  • Availability of resources required.
  • Track record of the proposer.

The Knowledge Management Committee (KMC) will be asked to provide advice if the proposed project is deemed appropriate for CIBSE participation by the Research Manager. If the project proposal meets these criteria the Research Manager will produce a Letter of Commitment by the deadline specified by the call for proposals.

Possible CIBSE deliverables

  • Published articles in Building Services Engineering Research and Technology or Lighting Research and Technology Journals.
  • Final technical reports or technical briefings or a Technical Memorandum.
  • Content for the update of other relevant CIBSE publications and Guides.
  • Articles in the CIBSE Journal.
  • Content for social media e.g. CIBSE blog.

Copies of published papers or other project outputs will be uploaded on the CIBSE website and linked to an online summary of the project. All published material should acknowledge CIBSE's contribution.

Project monitoring

CIBSE funded research projects will be managed by the Research Manager who will normally:

  • Act as the CIBSE appointed Supervisor (this would apply to sponsored PhDs, EngDs, KTPs etc).
  • Participate in steering and advisory group meetings and act as the key CIBSE liaison in all other research project activities.
  • Complete formal reports and other paperwork associated with the projects and their funding mechanism (this would apply to projects that are co-funded by other bodies).
  • Provide regular progress updates to the Knowledge Management Committee (KMC).

If considered necessary, KMC will be requested to provide advice at various stages of CIBSE funded research projects.
