Building Simulation Award 2015

2015 Building Simulation Group Award for Best MSc Dissertation

The 2015 award focused on projects involving the application and development of advanced simulation techniques and/or software for predicting the performance of buildings and environmental control systems.

The winner was Eugenio Garcia who studied his MSc in Fire Safety Engineering at the University of Central Lancashire and submitted a report entitled “Advanced computational simulation of fire performance and external spread on multi-storey facades”.
The two highly commended runners-up were Daniel Fosas de Pando who studied MSc in Architectural Engineering at the University of Bath with a project entitled “
Does improving the building fabric increase the risk of overheating in mid-terrace dwellings in the UK?; and Antonella Emili who studied MSc in Civil and Architectural Engineering and did her dissertation entitled “Assessing the thermal performance of glazed curtain wall systems” at the University of Cambridge.
Garcia’s research was accredited for its clarity, the use of software with validation and its potential guidance for adopting the approach used to most buildings at risk of fire. He won the cash prize of £1000 plus 12-month license for the IES VE-Pro software suite and a place at one of IES training courses which is worth over £7,000. De Pando and Emili each won a cash prize of £250.
