17 June 2015: BS7671 Third Amendment Briefing

Wednesday 17th June 2015
The Centre, Farnham Road, Slough

The evening was well attended with 20 IET members, six CIBSE members and 14 other attendees. Tea and  coffee was served during a lively networking session. Geoff Cronshaw, Chief Electrical Engineer, The IET, gave a presentation on the requirements of Amendment 2 for charging electric vehicles and Amendment 3 including:
  • Changes to Section 717 covering Mobile and Transportable Units.
  • A new Section 557, covering auxiliary circuits for the transmission of signals for detection, supervision or control.
  • Changes to earth fault loop impedance values.
  • Changes to RCD protection for cables concealed in a wall or partition.
  • Changes to the securing of wiring systems in escape routes.
  • Requirements for consumer units to have non-combustible enclosures rather than plastic.
  • Changes to electrical installation condition report and associated notes, including a requirement to carry out an inspection within an accessible roof space where electrical equipment is present in that roof space.
The evening finished with time for questions. The main theme of the discussion was installing cables in escape routes and requirements for cables to remain fixed during a fire.

Questions were also raised about appropriate coding of new non-compliances when inspecting and testing installations commissioned before the amendments.

Geoff gave guidance to individuals and confirmed that The IET would be issuing guidance in the near future. This report by Emma Wilcockson, IET Buckinghamshire.
