CIBSE celebrates new Region in United Arab Emirates

Following many years of work by the UAE committee with support from staff, CIBSE has now gained a license from the Dubai Association Chamber to operate as an official region in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).  This is not only a milestone for the local committee in the UAE, but one for CIBSE, as this is the first new region that has been launched in 29 years.  Many thanks go to all those that have been involved and contributed in the past as well as those who sit on the current committee. Further work can now be done to support members and prospective members in the country with technical events and conferences and much more.

The UAE construction industry continues to grow at a phenomenal rate with ongoing projects, investment into green open spaces, and strong government support with increasing emphasis on quality standards and a strive for efficiency and excellence. The industry constantly evolves and is turning to technology for the advantages it offers to projects like the government’s mandate to embrace BIM tools for design and construction. Building designs are in the forefront of implementing sustainability and green system accreditation, and there is huge movement on research and innovation in clean energy in the Middle East.

ChewPieng Ryan, Associate at Arup and current Chair of the UAE committee said ‘this is a great achievement for CIBSE in the UAE and now allows us as a committee to support members who live here with more technical networking events and gain traction locally with companies as well as local institutions and governmental bodies.’

A dinner was held on 21st April 2016 at The Westin Hotel to celebrate the launch of the UAE region where 200 people attended. Saeed Al Abaar, Chairman of Emirates Green Building Council provided the keynote speech ‘The Role of UAE buildings in a post COP21 world’.

Nick Mead, CIBSE Immediate Past President, who attended the launch dinner commented that ‘being able to attend the launch of a new CIBSE region in the UAE was fantastic. Those involved in committee should be proud to have reached this milestone. There are over 300 members based in the UAE and we need to ensure that we are able to serve members outside the UK as well, the licence in the UAE will now enable us to do this.  There is a lot of opportunity in the UAE in terms of membership, sharing and delivering knowledge via events as well as development of country specific guides and Technical Memorandum.”
