Ready Steady Light competition returns for a 12th year to shine on creativity

The Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) has announced its 12th annual ‘Ready Steady Light' competition will be taking place at Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance in Sidcup, Kent on Tuesday 18th March 2014.

Ready Steady Light involves around 18 teams, who will compete against each other to design and setup temporary exterior lighting installations using a range of equipment; and all in only 180 minutes.

Focusing on a return to basic engineering and design, the teams will light exterior sites around the Rose Bruford College campus using a random choice of designated equipment, and having to overcome challenges without a budget and within the time constraints given.

Students enrolled in Rose Bruford College's lighting and design BA course are supporting the event and will have a unique opportunity to see lighting professionals working in this sort of environment. Competition entrants have the chance of winning the accolades of ‘Most Creative Effect', ‘Best Technical Solution' and the Peer Prize. The ‘Most Creative Effect' will be judged on the use of natural features around the site by judges from Rose Bruford College and is sponsored by the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD).

The Best Technical Solution will be judged on the consideration of health and safety, light pollution and energy use by an expert SLL panel. The Peer Prize will be judged as the favourite installation of all the contestants taking part in 2014. Each team should be led by member of the SLL, and each organisation is only allowed one team. Newcomers are welcomed and members of the public are welcomed to see the installations from 6pm until 8pm.

Teams who wish to register to participate in this year's competition should go to James Wright of YLP which won the Technical Award in 2013 and says: "We had a really fun time at Ready Steady Light. It's a fantastic opportunity to get hands on and show your creative side... highly recommended."

Jonathan Martin of Light IQ which won the Peer Prize in 2013 says: "As an Alumini of Rose Bruford College, the SLL's annual Ready Steady Light event is always greatly anticipated as it's a brilliant opportunity to get back to basics and hands on with light in the College's wonderful grounds. The level of excitement in the air from both the students and the competition entrants is exactly how I always remembered the College and seeing teams of students go up against some of the architectural lighting industry's biggest names is wonderful, with some incredibly innovative schemes being produced. Every year I leave thinking that was fantastic, maybe I'll try that effect in my next lighting design."

The 2013 winner of the Most Creative Effect was DPA Lighting. For an interesting blog post from participants, Paul Nulty Lighting Design, about last year's experience visit:
