This course examines and interprets the current Fire Legislation in the UK and explores its impact on employers and those in charge of premises. The implication of building regulations on fire precautions is examined. There is also discussion of the fundamental pre-requisites for a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment.
Nature of legislation and guidance: Background to fire safety legislation in the UK; Branches of fire safety legislation; Building regulations: Different UK regimes; Functional requirements of building regulations.
Fire safety legislation for existing buildings: The three regimes across the UK; Scope of legislation; Duty holders under the legislation (including Responsible Person in England and Wales); Concept of person in control of premises;
Fire Safety Duties Fire risk assessment; Fire prevention Means of escape; Measures to assist escape Means of giving warning; Means for fighting fire Measures in respect of dangerous substances
Management of Fire Safety Fire safety strategy; Competent assistance Fire procedures; Staff training and information to employees Testing and maintenance; Information for third parties Co-operation and co-ordination between responsible persons; Enforcement arrangements and notices.

This course gives an excellent overview over the current fire safety legislation and guidance. The course is designed for all those in charge of workplaces and fire safety within buildings, such as building managers, fire safety managers and wardens, health and safety managers; it is also useful for those involved in designing and refurbishing buildings and employers who are not familiar with the current fire legislation, as well as those working within fire safety management requiring a refresher course.
