Battery Room Hazardous Area Classification

Does anybody have any experience of UPS battery rooms? We have a scheme where 512No 6V 160Ah Yuasa Endurance EN160-6 Valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) Batteries are located on racks in a room. Using BS EN 50272-2:2001 Safety Requirements for Secondary Batteries and Battery Installations we can calculation the ventilation requirements to maintain the hydrogen concentration below the 4 % vol hydrogen Lower Explosion Limit (LEL) threshold. Also using Figure B.1 we can calculate the safety distance (approx. 300mm) on boost. Can anybody explain how this relates to BS EN 60079-10-1:2009, and hazardous zones 0, 1 and 2. Is the whole room classed as a hazardous area, and as such do electrical accessories need to comply with these requirements.

Hi JB,

VRLA Cells and monoblocs emit gas under all operating conditions as recognized by relevant battery safety standards such as the EN50272-2 2001 or BS 6133:1995. Industrial Energy VRLA cells and monoblocs emit also small quantities of gas and, for safety purposes, all this emitted gas is considered to be hydrogen. The emitted hydrogen has to be diluted to such a level that also in the vicinity of the battery a concentration below the lower flammability level is assured. This level is 4% in volume of hydrogen in air and, for safety purposes, a lower level of 1-2% should be assured through appropriate methods. Industrial Energy Battery VRLA cells and monoblocs has the obligation to inform its customers that standards for battery room ventilation exist and that they should be observed The calculation for the air exchange is specified in above standard and is as follows: H2 Emission Calculation for Batteries - JB Calculation of Industrial Energy Valve Regulated Lead Acid Battery Gas Emission Gas emission rate of AGM VRLA battries are as follows a) While charging @ 2.250 V/cell & 25 deg.C = 0.0052 CC/Ah/cell/hr a) While charging @ 2.400 V/cell & 25 deg.C = 0.0347 CC/Ah/cell/hr To maintain the % hydrogen gas within safe limits i.e<1% appropriate room/cabinet is to be selected for battery operation OR Airchanges shall be made appropriately in case the room/cabinet size is fixed Calculations to arrive at the period after which complete air is to be evacuated from the room under different operating conditions are as follows: Room UPS/Battery Room CALCULATION Location UK-JB-BLDG A No of cells 512 Given B Cell Capacity(Ah) 160 Given a) While charging @ 2.250 V/cell & 25 deg.C C H2 Emission (CC/Ah/cell/hr) 0.0052 Battery specs D Total Volume of H2 emission in 1 hr (m3) 0.00042598 "=A*B*C/10^6" E Total Volume of H2 emission in a span of 24 hrs (m3) 0.01022362 "=D*24" b) While charging @ 2.400 V/cell & 25 deg.C F H2 Emission (CC/Ah/cell/hr) 0.0347 Battery specs G Total Volume of H2 emission in 1 hr (m3) 0.00284262 "=A*B*F/10^6" H Total Volume of H2 emission in a span of 24 hrs (m3) 0.06822298 "=G*24"

The location of the UPS battery room is not mentioned? If it is sharing a space inside an existing building which may be sprinkler protected, A suitable clean gas protection system with detectors and FPS provision to be made. Because of the explosive nature of the room the entire battery charging room shall have to be considered as hazardous and explosion proof light fittings, MV Fans or heat detectors has to be provided. Due to corrosive nature of the environment the duct work may be considered to be of Stainless steel material.
