TUESDAY 3rd DECEMBER 2013 - WELLINGTON PARK, Leyland PR25 3AB
5:30PM Refreshments for 6:00pm Lecture
CIBSE 2013 Ken Dale Award winner Kayley Lockhead presents:-
'RENEWABLE ENERGY' - THE KEY TO DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA
Kayley completed a First Class Honour BSE course at Leeds Met University with an excellent dissertation covering the scope for using Renewable Energy in Africa. This research revealed remarkable findings and inspired Kayley to go and see what is actually happening in Africa and to see if and how the abundance of renewable energy is making a difference. She discovered many technical issues but these seem overshadowed by the social, cultural and economic issues affecting African States. Security was also an issue and became a very real concern when the Westgate Shopping Mall, Nairobi, was attached during her visit.
This presentation compares the potential opportunities in Africa with actual life at the sharp end and provides an excellent insight into the problems facing all developing countries.
The session will also include a presentation on the broader topic of sustainable development in Africa where a Billion people live a lifestyle which is predominantly rural. Frank Mills will make this part of the presentation based on Kayley's study visit results and his work within the ASHRAE Sustainability committee.
This meeting will highlight the way CIBSE is responding to the challenge to provide sustainable design guidance to the developing world as well as the U.K, and the ongoing support to our growing international membership.
