Accreditation of Programmes
Educational base for professional registration
The information below outlines the standard academic requirements for professional engineering registration. If you have a degree and are interested in joining as a Graduate member, please refer to fact sheet G20, or for Student members please refer to fact sheet A20.
1.1 UK Qualifications: Exemplifying Qualifications
The Engineering Council's academic requirements for CEng registration are:
• An accredited BEng(Hons) degree in engineering or technology PLUS further learning to Masters level
• or an accredited MEng degree
NOTE: For those who qualified or began their studies on an accredited programme before
September 1999, the academic requirement is an accredited BEng(Hons) degree.
Click here for information about applying for CEng Registration through CIBSE.
The Engineering Council's academic requirements for IEng registration are:
• an accredited Bachelors or honours degree in engineering or technology
• or a Higher National Certificate or Diploma or a Foundation Degree in engineering or technology, plus appropriate further learning to degree level
• or an NVQ4 or SVQ4 which has been approved for the purpose by a licensed engineering institution.
NOTE: For those who qualified or began their studies before September 1999, the academic requirement is a Higher National Certificate/Diploma or foundation degree. The HNC/HND must include mathematics plus 8 level H units in subjects relevant to engineering, including a project.
Click here for information about applying for IEng Registration through CIBSE.
The Engineering Council's academic requirements for EngTech registration are:
• an Advanced/Modern Apprenticeship or other work based learning programme approved by their professional engineering institution.
• an Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Certificate or Diploma in Engineering or in Construction and the Built Environment
• or a qualification, approved by their professional engineering institution, in engineering or construction set at level 3 (or above) in the Qualifications and Credit Framework or at level 6 (or above) in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework
• or equivalent qualifications approved by their professional engineering institution
NOTE: For those who qualified or began their studies before September 1999, the academic requirement is an ONC or HNC/HND in engineering.

To find an accredited programme or to check the programme you have completed, please refer to the CIBSE list of University and College programmes or the Engineering Council website, www.engc.org.uk/
1.2 International Agreements and Accords
FEANI is a federation of professional engineers that unites national engineering associations from 31 European countries. FEANI maintains an index listing the institutions of engineering higher education in European countries within FEANI which are recognized as fulfilling the education requirements for the EUR ING title. Within Europe, the listing of degrees on the FEANI Index and their EUR-ACE badging promote their acceptance by regulators and employers.
An increasing number of countries outside Europe, including the UK, are signatories to the Washington, Sydney and Dublin Accords. These agreements mean that academic qualifications accredited by other countries will be accepted as meeting the academic requirements for registration as CEng, IEng and EngTech. Details of the agreements can be found on the Engineering Council website www.engc.org/
1.3 Alternative Qualifications
If you do not hold the exemplifying qualifications shown above, the following alternatives are available:
• Cognate Degrees (for CEng and IEng registration only)
Graduates in subjects related to engineering may be eligible for professional registration.
Related subjects would be, for example, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
Cognate qualifications will be assessed and further learning or a Technical Report may be required.
• Technical Report:see fact sheet M23 (CEng), A23(IEng) and LCIBSE(EngTech)
The purpose of the Technical Report is to show that you have gained the same level of engineering knowledge and understanding of engineering fundamentals as someone who has the exemplifying qualifications.
1.4 Non-UK qualifications
Holders of non-accredited qualifications awarded outside the UK who do not come within any of the International Agreements and Accords mentioned in section 1.2 above must meet current Engineering Council requirements.
The UK equivalence to overseas qualifications is established through CIBSE's Individual Case Procedure (ICP) panel. If additional study or alternative route is required, advice will be given.
For further information and advice, please contact CIBSE's Membership Department: membership@cibse.org or the Engineering Council: www.engc.org.uk/
