Training to upgrade your Membership

Being a member of CIBSE can enhance your career prospects through:

  • Accredited status as competent and professional building services engineers.
  • Support for education, training and Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • A Training and Development scheme 'leading' to corporate membership
  • As an Engineering Council nominate body we have the right to 'grant registration'

Skills and Knowledge
Competent Building Services Engineers are always undertaking professional development, and at CIBSE we call the learning and experience leading to the grades below "Training & Development (T&D)".   The fact sheets below will give you information on what skills and knowledge (known as competence criteria) you need to attain these grades and progress your career:
Fellow Competence Criteria
Member Competence Criteria
Associate Competence Criteria
Licentiate Competence Criteria

Objective Achieved Report
If you are proceeding via an independent pathway and would like to keep your own record of your learning and experience progress there is an Objective Achieved Report for you to fill in.

Once confident that you have reached the required competence level for a corporate membership grade, please refer to the Membership section or click on the grades on the right for more information.

Note on Industrial Placement
Those undertaking an industrial placement as part of a course of study should begin to compile their Training & Development Portfolio using the CIBSE Objectives described in the T&D Manual. The T&D Portfolio should be maintained after graduation in preparation for application for membership.

Candidates based in Hong Kong
For the training of graduates in HK, there is a structured training (Scheme A training) administered by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Companies accepted by HKIE will provide the placement for BS graduates for training within the companies for a period of 2 years. The training is accepted by both HKIE and CIBSE as satisfying the training requirements for corporate membership. Candidates based in Hong Kong should address all their enquiries relating to T&D to the Training Co-ordinator, CIBSE Hong Kong as follows: Mr K K Lam
