About the FM Group

The FM Group's expertise relates to the dynamic components of buildings. Components on which occupants increasingly depend for their safety and well-being and on which many organisations rely for the continuous operation of their business systems and occupant satisfaction. The Group enables us to demonstrate the true worth of building services engineers to successful FM.

The future of the building services profession will depend to a great extent on its ability to take a proactive interest in facilities management. It provides an opportunity for building services engineers and CIBSE members and non-members to make an impression in the boardroom as well as the plantroom.

The Group defines FM as: The management and optimisation of defined activities and resources in support of the overall corporate objectives. The mission statement for the Group is: To promote the application of Building Services Engineering to the continuing improvement of FM. Organisations are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of building services expertise to successful Facilities Management. The Group has also identified the following issues as being of major importance in the field of FM:

  • Obtaining and interpreting feedback from occupants in order to improve occupant satisfaction, efficiency and productivity;
  • Education and training needs for those who wish to follow a career in FM with particular emphasis on those with a building services background.
Above all, the group is well placed to link with all other CIBSE groups with regard to operational service risks associated with building services. As well as a programme of events, the group passionately believes in raising the FM profile and has achieved results of good cross team working with other Groups, Regions, BIFM and providing valued input into guidance documentation. Please contact any of the above people to be more actively involved!
