The Republic of Mauritius launched the “Sustainable Mauritius” concept a few years ago and recently in its vision 2030 project it aims at increasing the growth rate to 5.5 % as from 2017. Recent reports predict that the country will not be able to meet increasing power demand to support the targeted growth rate. Many residential buildings are being fitted with air conditioning system to provide thermal comfort. Due to lack of education, advices support and resources, most of the residential buildings are not designed for passive cooling. This research shows that it is possible to embrace simple and cost effective passive design for sustainable housing in tropical climates such as Mauritius but this will not be successful if the population is not involved right at the inception of the project.
