There is an industry-wide buzz about employee health & wellbeing in the property industry. Leaders in this space have been pursuing this agenda for some time and much research has been undertaken that supports the argument that buildings have a considerable impact on stress, physical health and mental wellbeing. Health and wellbeing initiatives have the value potential of attracting, and more importantly, retaining top talent and premium occupiers in the industry.
In this CIBSE NSW session, our speakers will discuss the WELL Building Standard in the context of the commercial property landscape plus several projects targeting WELL Certification and how this has influenced the designs in each case.
Emma McMahon, CBRE, Director – Sustainability, Pacific
Emma will share some of CBRE’s insights into this trend – why it’s important, who values it and what’s next for wellness in the built environment.
Andreas Moelsted, Steensen Varming, Mechanical Engineer
Andreas will discuss a current WELL certification for a new laboratory building. Health and wellbeing has always been central to good environmental and building services design, however some concepts like thermal comfort and indoor air quality can be quite abstract for those outside of our industry. WELL ratings bring some of these issues into focus, but like any rating tool, can often introduce unexpected constraints and limits on design solutions. Andreas will share his recent experience of how WELL certification impacted the services design of the building.
Tony Short, Charter Hall, Workplace Project Manager
Tony will discuss WELL certification for two of Charter Hall's own office fitouts. Providing a future focussed workplace solution is an ongoing journey addressing not only the physical and technical elements but also employee health and wellbeing. There is overwhelming evidence on the benefits of a healthy workplace and the WELL Building Standard shows how design, operations and behaviours can be improved to support employee wellbeing. Tony will share some of the learnings of Charter Hall in adopting the WELL Building Standard including the challenges faced when applied late in the design phase.
