Mel Allwood leads Arup’s Sustainability and Wellbeing team in Arup’s Buildings Engineering Group in London. Mel and her team provide sustainability advice to design teams, from concept stage through design development, construction and handover. Mel works collaboratively with Arup’s clients to define, clarify and deliver their sustainability objectives as part of a holistic approach to design and construction. Her team has developed a reputation for innovative and market-leading use of environmental assessment and has achieved a number of ‘firsts’ in the field of sustainable building certification. Examples include their pioneering role on the Crystal by Siemens, the first building in the world to achieve the highest certification in both BREEAM and LEED. In addition to her project work Mel has lead and collaborated on a number of research projects related to climate change adaptation, sustainability and water conservation.
