Young Engineers Awards - 2017 Finalists Announced
CIBSE ANZ Young Engineers Awards have gone region-wide in 2017 with the Mark Griffin Memorial Award - Student of the Year and the Jack Pirie Inspiring Excellence Award – Young Engineer of the Year.
Building Services needs innovative young engineers willing to challenge the boundaries of human comfort and the way buildings are designed and operated. The Mark Griffin Memorial Award called on entries from Engineering students from 17 Universities around the region; open to anyone studying BSc, BEng or MEng in Australia and New Zealand . Nominees were judged on their response to a refurbishment brief, demonstrating a well-rounded knowledge of efficient building solutions to lighting, heating, cooling, ventilation, hydraulics and building fabric.
Judges found that many entries in this category were well thought out and presented to a high standard.
The 2017 finalists for the Mark Griffin Memorial Award – Student of the Year are:
· George Fitzpatrick, Monash University
· Thai Nguyen, New South Wales University
For the Jack Pirie Inspiring Excellence Award - Young Engineer of the Year, nominations were considered based on responses in the following areas: contribution to building services; significance of contribution and; innovation in best standards. Judges also considered a statement from senior managers and why the nominee would make a good ambassador for the building services profession. These criteria reflect competencies required for achieving professional grades of CIBSE membership – an international benchmark for outstanding building services engineers.
The 2017 finalists for the Jack Pirie Inspiring Excellence Award – Young Engineer of the Year are:

· Nicola Viselli, Northrop Consulting Engineers

The winners will be announced at the CIBSE 30th Anniversary Cocktail Function 15 June 2017 at Melbourne Sealife Aquarium in front of over 100 guests including dignitaries from other institutions and commercial and educational leaders.
The winner of each award will receive a trophy and a $1000 prize courtesy of 2017 Young Engineers Awards sponsor Beca.
