Course Content

Over the last decade water efficiency has become mandatory, BS 6700 has been replaced, and there have been significant technological changes affecting the design of domestic water supply systems in commercial and residential buildings. This course provides guidance on the essential design considerations for water and energy efficient systems.

Session 1

  • An overview of how the Building and Water Regulations impact on design, together with an overview of BS EN 806, BS 8558, and other the principal Standards.
  • Water distribution options and water storage sizing.
  • Booster-pump technology, and associated considerations. 

Session 2

  • Scale reduction considerations and technologies
  • Hot water demand and generation options
  • Pipe material and jointing consideration

Session 3

  • Simultaneous demand theory
  • Water pressure considerations and pipe sizing techniques
  • Temperature maintenance within hot water supply systems

Session 4

  • Pipe thermal insulation considerations
  • Valves for isolation, control & safety
  • Pressure testing techniques

•  Plan a water distribution strategy for a building
•  Make design decisions about water efficiency and water re-use measures

•  Explain the benefits and disadvantages of different piping and jointing systems
•  Calculate simultaneous design flow

•  Recognise the purpose and features of various valve types
•  Outline the principles of pressure testing
