Course Content

Significant pump energy savings can be achieved by effective design of variable flow systems and control of pump speed.  Furthermore improved efficiencies can be achieved from low energy heat sources if system temperature differentials are maximised.  At the same time the practical considerations of system flushing and commissioning must be considered.  This event will give you the information you need to be confident that your designs for heating and chilled pipe systems optimise system efficiency, can be commissioned effectively.

Session 1 – Pipe sizing:

  • Pipe materials and factors influencing selection
  • Flow rates and velocity (mass / minimum rates and velocity limits)
  • Practical limits for pipe sizing
  • CIBSE guide C4 flow of fluids
  • Pressure losses through pipe fittings and valves
  • Calculating maximum system pressure loss
  • Benefits of variable speed pumps
  • Pump similarity laws and power consumption
  • Varying pump speed, control and different pump types

Session 2 – Valves:

  • Isolation, ball and gate performance
  • Double regulating valves and performance
  • Commissioning pipe sizes
  • Fixed orifice flow devices
  • Flow measurement
  • Commissioning DRV
  • Factors affecting flow measurement accuracy
  • Constant flow regulators

Session 3 – Valves continued:

  • Two port control valves
  • Performance of heating and cooling coils
  • Choosing control valve characteristics and 2 port control
  • Valve authority, differential pressure control valves and locations
  • Pressure independent control valves, how they work and selection
  • Cavitation in 2 port control valves and avoiding cavitation

Session 4 – Features to facilitate pre commission cleaning:

  • Cleaning of water systems
  • Primary circuit arrangement
  • Central boilers and chillers
  • Primary header and secondary pumps
  • Base and top of risers
  • Terminal branches

System Design:

  • Primary and secondary circuits
  • Variable and mixed temperature circuits
  • Designs incorporating remote DPCVs
  • Designs incorporating PICVs
  • Designs incorporating centralised valve modules
  • Module controlled variable flow systems

Learning Outcomes

  • Awareness of pipe selection priorities
  • Knowledge of pump speed control options
  • Overview of valve options
  • Awareness of methods by which system temperature differentials can be maximized
  • Knowledge of commissioning requirements and how they can be achieved
