Meet the Engineers: Peter Howells

Peter Howells

Why did you choose Building services engineering?
I didn't choose to enter a career in Building Services Engineering, it found me!! After I left university I applied to several different graduate schemes but a fast track management scheme with GSH seemed the most promising. After joining the scheme and working within the Building Services industry I can't imagine working anywhere else; I am extremely passionate about the sector.
What were your favourite subjects at school?
As I did engineering at university I would have to say Maths, Physics, and Design and Technology, but I also liked Computing and Chemistry.
What was your route into Building services?
I got on to a fast track management scheme after leaving University and quickly became a Contract Manager for a £1.2M M&E contract in London. I then had an opportunity to go to the USA for a 3-month internship, before returning to the UK and working as an Energy Account Manager looking after several UK wide contracts. In my current position I look after all the hard and soft services as a Facilities Manager for Channel 4.
What do you enjoy most about your current job or studies?
I don't want to be sat in a repetitive desk job so the fact that everyday is different is key for me. The whole team within Channel 4 is great and on a daily basis we have problems that need solving or issues to overcome. The other key difference for me is working in a creative environment; the staff at Channel 4 have so many different ideas and they rely on me and the rest of the team to try and accommodate them wherever possible.
What are your future plans and aspirations?
Channel 4 has recently awarded a TFM Contract so my immediate plans are to work closely with the new service provider to make sure the contract works for Channel 4 and meets our needs. However I aspire to be Head of Facilities Management within the next 5-7 years.
Why do you think it is important to belong to CIBSE?
It shows that you are dedicated and interested in the industry that you work in and an element of status within your career.
