The aim of this research is to develop a web-based graphical user interface (GUI) linking a building information model (BIM) to building management system (BMS) data. A BIM model of an existing 30,000m2 engineering building at the National University of Ireland Galway is used as a pilot case study. An interactive online version of this BIM model is created using the WebGL framework. This model is then linked to an existing MySQL database containing archived BMS data, thus enabling building managers and occupants to visually navigate through the building and associated zone data. It is hoped that this tool will make building performance information more accessible to all building stakeholders, increase awareness of energy performance, and support decision making during operation.
