Back to 2015 Symposium Overview

Session 19 Paper 1, University College London, 16-17 April 2015

It is commonly perceived that insulation is desirable for buildings in all climates, with the perception that it keeps the hostile cold or hot outdoor environment out. However, it should be noted that the energy required to keep the occupants warm or cool depends not only on solar gains, but also on internal loads, such as occupancy, lighting and small power. For commercial offices, internal gains are typically high, and air-conditioning is generally required even in the cold winter months. The current study probes the misconception that insulation is always desirable.
