CIBSE Building Services Consultancy of the Year (up to 100 Employees) 2015
BCM (Beverley Clifton Morris)
Specialising in sustainability and low-cost, low-carbon building solutions, BCM was established in 2002 to tackle the skills gap in the market which could be filled by designing more strategically. The consultancy has invested in its in-house training scheme, the e-MPDS programme. This is run under the auspices of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). BCM has also recently invested in a knowledge transfer partnership (KTP) with Liverpool John Moores University. Members of staff are encouraged to continue their learning and education constantly, while BSI ISO 9001: 2008 accreditation ensures regular review and planning of training. Employees are also trained as CIBSE Low Carbon Consultants, supporting their checking of designs for compliance with Part L and energy assessment.
One of BCM's exemplar projects is Seashell Trust's residential and education campus in Cheadle, Stockport. BCM undertook comparative analysis of various energy options for a site-wide solution that had to be both flexible and expandable. The consultancy designed an "innovative energy centre that combines gas-fired boilers with a solar thermal installation. This provided heating and domestic hot water to residential and educational buildings via a site-wide district heating network. Using dynamic simulation modelling, BCM advised the design team on elements such as fabric efficiencies, insulation levels and thermal mass to develop highly efficient buildings and mechanical and electrical services using a fabric-first approach. The project now benefits from a 23% carbon emissions reduction, saving £21k per annum in running costs.
