Fair Use Policy

CIBSE publications, the CIBSE Knowledge Portal, its content and any passwords issued by CIBSE are protected by copyright and other intellectual property rights. These rights are either owned by CIBSE or CIBSE has been given rights over them (see CIBSE copyright below for details).

The Knowledge Portal is designed to allow CIBSE Members ready access to CIBSE publications as a benefit of their membership for their personal use. It is incumbent on CIBSE members to ensure that they do not abuse that benefit nor make their membership details available, knowingly or by accident, thereby permitting abuse by a third party. PDFs downloaded from the Knowledge Portal are watermarked to remind members of their responsibilities and CIBSE's ownership of the content.

Responsibility to ensure downloaded documents are not abused nor CIBSE copyright infringed lies with the member making the download. Most CIBSE publications are available as hard copy for purchase by CIBSE members at very preferential pricing.

CIBSE data and tools supplied through the Knowledge Portal are also subject to similar conditions and copyright restrictions.

Users who are not members of CIBSE can use the Knowledge Portal to search for CIBSE publications and selected documents from other publishers. A number of the  former are available free of charge. The rest, and those titles from sources other than CIBSE, are available to purchase through the bookshop functionality of the CIBSE Knowledge Portal. In some cases, even these may be linked directly from our entry. Non-members can purchase these documents though the Knowledge Portal or choose to join CIBSE.

Abuse of the CIBSE Knowledge Portal includes:

  • Access to CIBSE members’ benefits (eg to document texts) by persons other than CIBSE members or other persons given those rights by CIBSE.
  • Excessive downloading of CIBSE texts.
  • Infringement of CIBSE’s rights as copyright holder. More details of this and of what is permitted and what not, can below.

CIBSE data and tools supplied through the Knowledge Portal are also subject to similar conditions and copyright restrictions.

Usage of the Knowledge Portal is monitored to discourage abuse. Suspected abuses will be investigated. CIBSE membership may be withdrawn from offending members.

Requests for usage outside these parameters can be made to Nicholas Peake, CIBSE Head of Knowledge  npeake@cibse.org.

CIBSE copyright

As stated above, CIBSE publications, the CIBSE Knowledge Portal, its content and any passwords issued by CIBSE are protected by copyright and other intellectual property rights. These rights protect CIBSE publications, in both hard copy and electronic formats, and other CIBSE content such as articles, tools and data.

The Knowledge Portal is designed to allow CIBSE Members ready access to CIBSE publications as a benefit of their membership for their personal use. PDFs downloaded from the Knowledge Portal are watermarked to remind members of their responsibilities and CIBSE's ownership of the content.

What users can do

  • Download electronic versions of CIBSE content from the CIBSE Knowledge Portal. These files should be stored on the user’s own equipment. PDF files may benefit from enhanced functionality dependent on their own document viewer (eg Adobe Reader) such as search, cut-and-paste etc.
  • Copy of parts of CIBSE content – be that hard copy (eg photocopying of books) or copying parts of electronic files - as permitted under the rules of “fair dealing”. This is deemed to permit copying of up to 10% of that content (or one complete chapter of a book, if that is greater) BUT ONLY for your personal use.  Note: If a chapter comprises 25% of a book, you can photocopy the entire chapter; but if you want to photocopy extracts from more than one chapter, you can only copy up to 10% of the book.
  • Cut and paste from CIBSE content (up to 10% of the total) BUT ONLY for your personal use.
  • Allow third parties to read your copy of the CIBSE content (but without you distributing that content).

What users cannot do

  • Make your membership details available, knowingly or by accident, to a third party thereby permitting abuse of copyright. Downloadable files are provided only for the benefit of the person entitled to do that.
  • Copying of content except as detailed above ie above 10% of the total content or more than 1 Chapter of a book (whichever is the greater). Note: text that is copied from the CIBSE content should not be changed within the context of the original document
  • Copying of any CIBSE content that is subject to a third party’s copyright in any form eg CIBSE weather data, some photographs, illustrations or graphics within CIBSE content (but which have been licensed by CIBSE for our use).
  • Distribute CIBSE content to third parties, in any format or for any purpose without express permission from CIBSE.
  • Any other breach of CIBSE copyright eg use of CIBSE documents for re-use, re-sale or other gain, promotion or benefit to a third party (within a training course etc).

Requests for usage outside these parameters can be made to Nicholas Peake, CIBSE Head of Knowledge npeake@cibse.org.
