Piecing It All Together – Prefabrication and Modular Construction

Back to CIBSE ANZ home

There was standing room only when CIBSE and the CIOB came together for the first in a series of technical seminars to present Piecing It All Together – Prefabrication and Modular Construction in Sydney.

The event saw presentations from Jon Deadman, Laing O'Rourke & Richard Drigo, Fredon on their lessons learnt from Blacktown Hospital, Angus Kell on CSR’s modular facades, Phillip Tondl on Macquarie University Incubator and Peter McUtchen from PARKD on modular car parks.

Each presentation focused on different aspects of prefabrication however the event highlighted common themes with regard to its benefits and requirements for successful implementation. These included a change in mindset to Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) from the outset with increased design coordination being important to realizing the onsite benefits of a quicker, safer, higher quality construction methodology.

The panel were in agreement that the industry is not yet fulfilling the full potential of the techniques. Applying lessons learnt, designing for standardization and procurement model integration are all key factors in improving the execution of prefabrication methods.

Presentations have been provided where permission has been granted:
Clinical Services - Blacktown Hospital
Unitised Façade Solutions

A similar joint association seminar will take place in Melbourne on 8 May at RMIT and in Christchurch on Thursday 6 June 2019. With future plans to offer this technical event in other ANZ states also.
