Earlier this month the CIBSE YEN NSW committee held the sell-out event – Aspirational Engineer – at JHA Consulting Engineers offices.
Four industry leaders shared their views and experiences on their rise to the top in a bid to inspire young engineers towards business leadership.
Emerging professionals learnt about business development strategy from Ben James, Principal at Wood & Grieve Engineers, who held on to few secrets as he spilled his truths building a network and securing new business to a room full of his future competitors.
Lester Partridge, Director at LCI Consultants, spoke of career pathways and reflected on the changes in the engineering workplace over the past 30 years. He encouraged engineers to seize opportunities to work on different projects and to absorb as much knowledge as possible.
Mairead Hogan, Associate, Arup addressed key consulting skill and went on to share her personal and professional journey, advising young professionals to find something they love outside of work and use it to connect with people and as well as understanding their personal strengths and weaknesses, as she candidly shared hers.
The final speaker was Ashish Kulkarni, Associate Director, NDY who talked about collaborative teamwork with an example of how a collaborative mindset across disciplines let to an agile solution to resolve a potentially costly delay of a building’s scheduled opening.
YEN Committee Member Nirodha Siriwardena did a fantastic job of chairing the event. He commented, "As an building services engineer who is still in the early stages of my careers, I’m always looking for advice on how I can improve my skillset – especially from a consulting perspective. This is why I find nights like this great – it provides a relaxed forum in which I can learn from experienced industry professionals and make new connections. I’m looking forward to the next event!"
The panel addressed all the questions of an enthusiastic crowd however, the responses didn’t come so fast when an audience member asked the panel, the typical interview question emerging professionals face, which is to each detail their 5-year plan.
CIBSE would like to that the panel of speakers for sharing their time and expertise on the night as well as event hosts JHA Consulting Engineers and Constructive for supporting this event.
