CIBSE launches new Apprentice Award

28 Apr 20

A new award recognising the invaluable contribution played by apprentices has been launched by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

The new Apprentice of the Year award will form part of the Young Engineers Awards, joining the Employer of the Year and CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate of the Year awards.

Launched to coincide with the 25th year of the Young Engineers Awards, the new award allows the CIBSE community to recognise more of our early career contributors. Investment in apprentices, together with the contribution they make are critical to the future success of our industry. This new award recognises the impact that investment has on bringing forward future engineering talent.

The Young Engineers awards collectively shine a spotlight on the pool of new talent and future leaders who are vital to the future of our industry, while also celebrating those who champion, mentor and nurture them.

CIBSE President Lynne Jack said of the awards: ‘In these challenging times, the encouragement of those new to the engineering community is essential to ensure that they reach their full potential and feel motivated to progress. It is this new talent which gives us hope of finding innovative solutions to the climate crisis and of having a significant impact on building performance.’

Entry to all the Young Engineers Awards 2020 is now open.

The Apprentice of the Year award is open to apprentices registered on Standards/Frameworks at level 3 and above in building services engineering and related occupations, who have started their apprenticeship scheme before 1 January 2020.

Entrants are required to submit a three-minute video of themselves talking about ‘Why the role of a building services engineer is so important’.

The Employer Award has three categories for small, medium and large employers, together with an overall winner. Employers are asked to demonstrate how they place young engineers at the centre of their business and invest in their career progression.

The judges will be looking for employers whose progressive strategies for recruiting, nurturing and empowering young people have provided a suitable environment for our young engineers to flourish.

The CIBSE ASHRAE Group Graduate Award is in its 25th year and has long been the most sought after accolade for young building services engineers. Finalists are challenged to show off their presentation skills on a given topic in front of a panel of industry judges.

This year’s winner will enjoy a fully paid for trip to the ASHRAE Winter Meeting in Chicago Illinois in January 2021.   The awards are also supported by the Manly Trust.

Any engineer who has graduated in a building services-related field, either under or post-graduate, in the past two years is eligible to take part.

The CIBSE Young Engineers Awards 2020 will take place on 8 October at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) in London. They are delivered in partnership with CIBSE Patrons, and sponsored by Kingspan Industrial Insulation, Baxi and Ideal Commercial Boilers  and Swegon Air Management.

All entries must be received by 3 August 2020
