2018 Finalists announced

We are delighted to confirm that the finalists for the SLL Young Lighter of the Year 2018 will be:



Emma Beadle
- Children's Utopiuan Visions of the City: Co-Designing Lighting Masterplans through Play and Exploration



Katia Kolovea
- Light as a Medium to Enhance Communication in Urban Spaces



Carla Piatti
- Interactive Lighting in Public Spaces



Sanny Yuwono
- Is there a threshold for the degree of chroma used to allow colour in exterior lighting without making the building incongruous to its surroundings?

The finals will be taking place at LuxLive on 15 November 2018, from 13:30 in the lightspace Arena.

Young Lighter of the Year Award 2017 


The Competition, now in its 24th year, provides a high profile opportunity to help promote younger members of lighting related professions. The competition provides a unique platform for young lighters giving them the opportunity to illustrate their knowledge and research on a lighting subject, hone their presentation skills, and raise their profile within the industry.

  • Finalist presentations –LuxLive exhibition, 15 November 2018
  • Winner announced at Lux Awards, 15 November 2018

Matt Hanbury wins SLL Young Lighter of the Year 2017

The finals of the SLL Young Lighter of the Year 2017 took place at LuxLive on 16th November 2017. After much deliberation, the judges awarded the prize for Best Written Paper to Amir Nezamdoost for his paper, A New Manual Blind Use Pattern for Annual Energy and Daylight Simulations.

For the first time, the Society invited the audience to participate in judging the winner Best Presented Paper, which was given to Matt Hanbury for his paper, Ultra-thin Surface Light Sources: Picking up where OLED stalled. Following his success at the finals, Matt was then awarded the SLL Young Lighter of the Year 2017 at the Lux Awards.
