Key Areas

This course is for those involved in the design of natural gas services installations in domestic, commercial and industrial properties and those responsible for the administration/supervision of building works which include the installation of gas services and equipment. It is intended to provide basic information on designing, installing and maintaining gas installations and appliances in compliance with the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations (1998).

Course Content

The course will cover the background to the Regulations; the stated requirements of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations (1998) and the interpretation and application of the Regulations, as detailed in the HSC Approved Code of Practice Document L56. It will look at the function of HSC and GasSafe and legal responsibilities.

The basic properties of gases and associated dangers will be discussed, together with practical aspects of installation, including properties of gas; installation materials; piping systems; metering; identification and labelling; basic principles of sizing, testing and commissioning and gas installations in laboratories, schools and kitchens.

This course will not cover specialist or appliance specific aspects of design and installation. Reference will be made to documents giving more detailed information (e.g. IGEM and British Standards).
