Engineering Core Modules

CIBSE currently offer 13 Engineering Core Modules each consisting of seven hours worth of content with quizzes to test your knowledge and additional resources that can be accessed at any time. Once completed you will receive a certificate of completion.

Cable Sizing

CPD hours: 7

This course employs a cable sizing template that acts as a visual checklist for the necessary design decisions and calculations to meet the requirements of BS 7671:2008.

Introduction to Mechanical & Electrical Building Services

CPD hours: 7

This course introduces the role of the modern building services engineer; why we need building services - what are they, what they look like and what they do. It covers areas of mechanical services such as heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and their control. On the electrical size, it covers, for example, three-phase supplies and its distribution, electric shock prevention, earthing and uninterruptable power supplies.

Hot & Chilled Water Pipework Systems

CPD hours: 7

This course prepares engineers for the process of designing a complete pipework system for delivering heating or chilled water to terminal units in buildings. Dealing with how to size the pipes, pumps and valves, how to layout the system and how to control its operation.

Low Voltage Distribution

CPD hours: 7

This course is designed for non-electrical Building Services engineers who now find that they have an increasing need to be able to design electrical distribution schemes, or for those with a more traditional electrical background who wish to apply their knowledge practically to the design of electrical distribution within buildings.

Heating Systems Design

CPD hours: 7

This course is primarily intended for junior to intermediate engineers who are being asked to design a heating system for the first time. However, the module is not for the complete beginner.

Lighting Design

CPD hours: 7

This course gives engineers/project managers with little or no lighting design experience a better understanding of, and become confident in, the use of design methods for indoor lighting applications. Also, to gain knowledge of the standards and guides used in lighting design and to better understand the Lighting designer/lighting specialist's offered solution.

Ventilation Design

CPD hours: 7

This course enables you to report on alternative ventilation strategies for a given brief, and help clients to make informed decisions about what method of ventilation they should adopt - i.e. natural, mechanical or mixed mode - the type of controls to be used, and decisions about access requirements.

High Voltage Distribution

CPD hours: 7

This course aims to provide an excellent introduction to both 11kV and 33kV systems. Also ensuring that you will  be understanding how to achieve not only discrimination across an installation HV/LV transformer, but full discrimination throughout your distribution network, right back to the DNO supply.

Air Distribution

CPD hours: 7

This course covers ducts manufactured in various shapes including circular, square, rectangular and oval and materials ranging from steel to aluminium and plastic.

Air-conditioning Systems

CPD hours: 7

This course has been developed as an introductory module for building services engineers/project managers with little or no air conditioning design experience. However, it is recommended that you would have studied the CIBSE modules for both 'Ventilation Design' and 'Heating Systems Design' (or equivalent), before you study this module.

Electrical Commissioning and Testing

CPD hours: 7

This course looks at the basics of commissioning of the following items as an aid to understanding the commissioning processes involved (by others, usually the manufacturer or a specialist contractor), rather than an in-depth knowledge of the subject.

Commissioning and Testing of Mechanical Services

CPD hours: 7

This course provides an explanation of the main activities involved in the commissioning of air and water circulation systems.  It also explains in detail the design issues that need to be considered and the commissioning valves, dampers and flow measurement devices that need to be incorporated in systems to make them commissionable.

Above Ground Drainage

CPD hours: 7

This course deals with the pipework installation within a building that carries away waste water from sanitary fittings including WCs, wash basins, showers, sinks and floor gullies. This is known as Sanitary Pipework. Once this pipework goes below ground, it is termed “Drainage”.
