This interactive and practical workshop supports engineers to explore how developing their mentoring and communication skills can enrich the quality of their and their mentees’ professional practice. Attendees will feel more confident about combining their technical engineering and scientific expertise with person-centred skills to get the best out of their projects and working relationships.

The course covers the difference between mentoring and coaching – understanding how to help earlier-career engineers to develop their visions and goals and support them to achieve these. It will also cover how to mentor mid-career engineers and leaders, including how to support them to grow their knowledge, ideas and experience throughout their careers.

Attendees will learn about transactional analysis, active listening, question types and communication skills, with emphasis on the practical applications of these in everyday engineering contexts.

In particular, the course will detail the requirements of the Initial Professional Development (IDP) and Training and Development (T&D) processes so that mentors are able to successfully support their mentees as they embark on the route to becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng, IEng, Eng.Tech).

High quality mentorship for early-career engineers supports them to navigate their qualifications more effectively, quickly and confidently, and become better qualified industry leaders in the future. For more senior colleagues, mentoring supports improved leadership skills, getting more out of their teams, the ability to have more meaningful conversations with clients, and more successful partnerships and projects.

Attendees will have tailored support during the day to think about how they themselves would benefit from being a mentor and develop a plan to implement in their own work.

Learning Outcomes

Delegates will learn practical mentoring skills and feel confident in developing and managing meaningful mentoring relationships.

This rich and engaging course is for anyone with an interest in becoming a mentor, and using mentoring as a method of investing in their professional relationships and communities to be able to achieve more together. It would be especially useful to those mentoring on IPD and/or T&D Schemes.
