The Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) and CIBSE Yorkshire Region are pleased to invite you to this upcoming hybrid event to be held in Sheffield. It will look at external lighting for people, with Steve Fotios, Professor of Lighting and Visual Perception at the University of Sheffield.

During the presentation, Professor Fotios will discuss how external lighting affects our perception of space and our ability to perform visual tasks, considering pedestrians and cyclists in particular.

This presentation will consider the following points:

• What is meant by “safety”? There is the functional need for lighting in some outdoor areas, but then there is the perception of safety, by which most people think of crime.

• Distinction between measurable effects of lighting a space (crime statistics), and our perception of safety. Better lighting in an area may encourage people in, giving better passive supervision of spaces, but it is hard to measure these effects.

This event will be chaired by David Battersby, the SLL Regional Representative for CIBSE Yorkshire. The event will be held both in person and streamed online. There will be a question and answer session at the end of the presentation.

Steve Fotios is Professor of lighting and visual perception at the University of Sheffield where he leads research on lighting for pedestrians and cyclists. He received the CIE quadrennial award in 2015 for road lighting research and is now associate director of CIE Division 4. Steve is Editor in Chief of the Lighting Research & Technology Editorial Board.
