Derek Clements-Croome

Derek Clements-Croome

CEng FCIBSE MSFE

Professor Derek Clements-Croome’s service to CIBSE and its predecessor, the Institution of Heating and Ventilation Engineers (IHVE), spans nearly 70 years. He has shaped the evolution of building services engineering through pioneering work in intelligent buildings and occupant wellbeing.

His sustained commitment to the industry is reflected in his leadership across CIBSE committees, regional groups, and working groups, making significant contributions to natural ventilation, intelligent buildings, education, and research. A former Vice President of CIBSE and founder of its Intelligent Buildings Group, he has led key initiatives including the development of CIBSE AM10 and the creation of accredited university programmes.

His influential publications and ongoing research have shaped industry practice globally, promoting sustainable, human-centric design. As editor of the Intelligent Buildings International Journal and a mentor to generations of professionals, his leadership continues to impact education, policy, and innovation, ensuring future professionals are well equipped for emerging challenges.

Visionary, collaborative, and ethically driven, Derek exemplifies lifelong dedication to the profession and is a fitting candidate for the CIBSE Gold Medal.

Richard Rooley

Richard Rooley

CEng FCIBSE

Richard Rooley has grown his reputation within IHVE and then CIBSE over more than 50 years by sitting on the Board and many committees. He founded the team build competition based on team working across the building industry. He is particularly distinguished as being the first foreign President of ASHRAE in 2003.He is also one of the very few CIBSE members elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. His work includes designing, project managing and acting as an expert witness and arbitrator. Richard believes he has been driven by the relationship between occupants of buildings and the creation and operation of them.

But this professional work is only one aspect that defines his interests and expertise. He has over many years had active ministry and community engagement in the Thames Valley region. Holding dialogues across different communities is something Richard really believes in. Together with his avid curiosity this makes him not only a good communicator but also a person open to new ideas. He has been a Master of not one but two City of London Livery Companies which is a rare achievement.

Richard is someone you can talk to about science, the nature of consciousness, or aspects of spirituality, his interests are broad and deeply engaging. Derek recalls discovering that he and Richard both played the violin, which led to a long and fascinating conversation about music. Though this a brief citation, Derek’s words make it clear that Richard is a most worthy recipient of the prestigious CIBSE Gold Medal.

Peter Wong

Peter Wong

HonFCIBSE

Once Peter said, “Engineering is art”. What Peter has been trying to say, not just to building services engineers, but to all professionals, is that when you are truly passionate and dedicated to your profession, the products you create are works of art. People will stop and appreciate them. Right, stop and stand like that, it’s exactly how I looked every time Peter spoke to me. And every time I looked at him, I saw an 18-year-old energetic and passionate young man (though, by the way, he is now 22). He was so energetic that he used to call me at midnight to ask questions, and to text me at 7 am with the answer. He was so passionate that he constantly encouraged us to see things differently, to do things differently, and to embrace change.

Peter has held many roles: a director, CIBSE President, HKIE President, founding chair of HKIE BSD... you name it. Tonight, as I stand here speaking, I realize why he has been so successful. His passion, dedication, and contributions have continuously motivated him to create art in engineering. And that is exactly why he is such a success.

Professor Kevin Kelly has devoted over 30 years to CIBSE, beginning as an electrical apprentice in the 1970s and later becoming Head of the Electrical Department at Technological University Dublin. Since the 1990s, he has held key roles including Ireland Chairperson, President of the Society of Light and Lighting, CIBSE President in 2021, and Chair of the Benevolent Fund Trust.

A champion of inclusivity, mentorship, and professional development, Kevin has elevated CIBSE’s global reputation and strengthened ties between academia and industry. At TU Dublin, he pioneered degree programmes in electrical services engineering and created advanced entry routes for electricians to gain accredited qualifications. He founded and edited the SDAR Journal, promoting academic–industry collaboration, and continues to supervise PhD students as Professor Emeritus.

His influence extends beyond CIBSE through contributions to Engineers Ireland, SEAI, RIAI, ACEI, and NSAI, shaping engineering standards and advancing sustainability and energy management across the sector.

Kevin’s integrity, passion, and commitment to mentorship have inspired generations of engineers. Tonight, we honour his outstanding legacy and impact with the award of a Gold Medal.
