Mechanical Engineer
Job Summary: As a Mechanical Engineer in building services, you will manage the design and implementation of building systems, collaborating with project teams to deliver efficient and compliant designs. You will take responsibility for mechanical design tasks, work closely with clients, and ensure project deliverables align with UK building regulations, standards, and sustainability goals. Key Responsibilities: Develop mechanical design solutions for HVAC, plumbing, ventilation and other mechanical systems in full compliance with UK Building Regulations (particularly Parts F, G, L, and P) and relevant British Standards. Ensure designs meet Building Regulations Part F (Ventilation) requirements for adequate fresh air provision, extract ventilation rates, and indoor air quality standards. Apply Building Regulations Part G (Sanitation, hot water safety and water efficiency) including water supply systems, drainage, hot water safety (legionella prevention), and water efficiency measures. Implement Building Regulations Part L (Conservation of fuel and power) requirements for energy efficiency in building services, including heating system controls, insulation of pipework and ductwork, and commissioning procedures. Address Building Regulations Part P (Electrical safety) implications for mechanical systems integration and ensure proper coordination with electrical installations. Conduct load calculations, energy modelling, and system analysis to optimise performance, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness while meeting regulatory minimum standards. Prepare, review, and update technical specifications, project schedules, and cost estimates that demonstrate compliance with applicable regulations and standards. Oversee drafting and modelling work in AutoCAD, Revit, and other tools to ensure regulatory compliance and design precision. Conduct site assessments and inspections to verify project feasibility, regulatory compliance, and construction quality against approved designs. Prepare and review Building Control submissions, technical reports, and compliance documentation for mechanical systems. Collaborate with architects, contractors, Building Control Officers, and other engineering disciplines, ensuring all project aspects align with client expectations and regulatory requirements. Remain up-to-date with UK building standards (Building Regulations, CIBSE guidelines, BS standards, BREEAM requirements) and integrate sustainable practices into design solutions. Ensure mechanical installations comply with relevant British Standards including BS 6700 (water installations), BS 5449 (heating systems), and BS 5925 (ventilation systems).
