Associate Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role: Due to continued growth in the company, a new opportunity has arisen for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer in Edinburgh, to join a growing and highly respected team, in a predominantly office-based role, working on major projects throughout the UK and Europe. This role will involve developing and delivering designs to facilitate safe and compliant installations on site. Main Responsibilities: Designing in conjunction with fire strategy reports, local building regulations & planning authority requirements. Attending Design team meetings. Carrying out site surveys of existing installations where applicable. Producing heating/cooling (thermal modelling) and ventilation load calculations using industry software Sizing and selection of AHUs, FCUs, extract fans, pumps, chillers, ASHP, boilers, plate heat exchangers etc Producing above ground drainage calculations and sizing of drainage systems Sizing and selection of domestic hot and cold-water equipment (heaters, storage tanks etc) Producing pipe and duct sizing calculations using industry software or other desktop spreadsheets Sizing and selection of firefighting sprinkler and pumping systems (preferred but not essential) Producing stage reports & presentations. Preparing Designers Risk Assessment and Mitigation Reports Detailing mechanical layouts & schematics for build. Meeting project delivery deadlines. Production of detailed design and survey reports. What you'll need to succeed: Extensive experience in the Mechanical Engineering building services for construction Mechanical Engineering Degree or equivalent Good knowledge of CIBSE, IEC, BS, IS &EN Irish, UK standards or ASHRAE. Working knowledge of design software such as Hevacomp, Carrier HAP, CyMap, IES/TAS required Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in delivering high-profile private infrastructure projects, with a strong focus on: Logistics developments (both speculative and for specific occupiers) Film studio developments Infrastructure associated with port operations Large enabling works projects, including major earthworks and plateau preparation Strategic advisory work related to land acquisition Project values typically range from £5–10 million through to £20–40 million, with large-scale schemes exceeding £100 million. Our client is involved from feasibility stage through to construction, with most projects delivered within a Design & Build (D&B) environment. Key Responsibilities Design and delivery of private infrastructure schemes Drainage design and flood risk assessments Earthworks modelling and level design Working within D&B contract frameworks Client-facing engagement and coordination Essential Requirements Minimum 5+ years’ UK private sector experience Proven experience in the design of private infrastructure, ideally within the logistics sector Strong drainage design capability, with proficiency in MicroDrainage and/or Flow Experience in ground modelling, cut and fill analysis, and level design using Civil 3D (including feature lines) Competence in preparing Flood Risk Assessments (Zones 1–3) Experience in paving design, including external yard slabs to TR66 standards Familiarity with Design & Build contracts, including experience acting as a novated engineer Comfortable in client-facing roles Desirable Experience Highways design experience (advantageous but not essential) Ambition to move into multidisciplinary project management in the future Seniority The level (Senior to Principal) will be determined based on the successful candidate’s breadth and depth of experience across the essential and desirable criteria.

Lead contact for the running of projects and other associated works i.e. commercial clients, local authority, and new business opportunities. Provide Technical support to engineers / clients and other teams members as required. Responsibility of ensuring compliance with regulatory and legal requirements, when planning and undertaking works. To meet the requirements of NICEIC QS status for the company and conduct associated duties. After successful completion of QS assessment. (Not required at start of role). Full understanding of drawings, diagrams, and specifications to interpret, develop and adapt to a project during the course of its execution to achieve completion. Health and Safety, Quality & Environmental Ensure compliance with all company regulatory H&S, quality processes, and environmental policies and procedures. Competent in demonstrating the appropriate use of PPE so that it is deployed and used correctly, ensuring compliance to regulations, and ensuring workers are competent in its use. Undertake development and implementation of Health & Safety RAMS. Conduct regular site visits and carry out H&S and quality audit reporting. Conduct quarterly compliance checks for assigned team members. Complete Non-Conformance investigation reports when required. Develop alongside the Quality Assurance Team the tool box talk and CPD training material required to provide H&S training and compliance. Financial Responsibilities Order goods and services relevant to the works delegated to the section. Approve decisions, requests, expenditure, and recommendations associated with assigned contracts/works, and in agreement with your line management structure. Produce schedules, negotiate costs and timescales, agree best methods and practices to meet budgetary constraints, ensuring quality and time expectations are adhered to. Submit applications and invoices in a timely manner, in accordance with Client instructions and with a high regard for accuracy. Conduct Job costings, quarterly WIP figures, and other financial analysis of works assigned in accordance with financial processes and timescales. General The post holder will be required to demonstrate a proactive and positive mindset with a “hands on” approach; this may involve working on site from time to time.
