Health and Safety Advisor - Civils or Construction
I'm currently working with a well-established civil engineering contractor who are seeking an experienced Health & Safety Advisor to join their project team on a permanent basis in the Perthshire area of Scotland. The Opportunity My client is looking for a hands-on H&S professional who can work autonomously across their operations, providing expert safety guidance and embedding a positive safety culture throughout the project workforce. You'll be working closely with the Project Health & Safety Manager, managing ISO45001 systems, and acting as the go-to safety advisor for site management and operational teams. This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious H&S professional from a construction or civils background who wants to make a real impact on project delivery and safety performance. Health and Safety Advisor
Post: HSEQ AdvisorLocation: Glasgow Reports to: Head of HSEQ My client is a highly successful civil engineering contractor, looking for an H&S Advisor to be based in Glasgow covering a number of their sites in the Glasgow area… Purpose: * To be part of the Integrated Health, Safety, Environment & Quality Team, working closely with project teams, stakeholders and the supply chain * To be responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring programs that promote a safe and healthy working environment whilst ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, reporting to the Head of HSEQ Department. * To deliver Health, Safety, Environment and Quality support and advice to the site, including coordinating / carrying out site audits. * To ensure that all Risk Assessments, SSOW, COSHH and other key documents are reviewed and fit for purpose. * Ensure any environmental consents or permits required are applied for, and all conditions are complied with. Communicate permit requirements/conditions to the project delivery team in good time to enable work to be planned. * In the event of any Health, Safety or Environmental incidents, carry out the necessary investigation, preparing reports and remedial actions as required and liaising with regulatory bodies. * Assist with meeting clients, stakeholders, legislative other third party and internal requirements on Health, Safety, Environment and Quality as required. * Support the Contract in achieving any award schemes and 3rd party certifications where needed, including gained certified ISO/NHSS within Year 1 of the Contract. * To ensure compliance with Audit and Assurance, including internal audit, Non-Conformance reporting and investigation, and assist with the meeting or, and reporting of, identified KPIs / SPIs within both the contract and from the wider Group. * To lead with Innovation and Best Practice. Key Result Areas Primary responsibilities to: * Ensure compliance with clients' HSE & SEPA regulations and standards. * Assist with management controls in order that all personnel are aware of their statutory duties and responsibilities and to provide advice as and when required. * Conduct risk assessments and audits to identify and mitigate potential hazards in the workplace. Develop action plans to address identified risks. * Manage & carry out surveillance/ regular inspections/ audits of sites, depots and workplaces to determine whether work is being carried out in accordance with their Operations UK & Ireland policy, procedures and the relevant statutory provisions. Where appropriate, make recommendations for improvement. * Prepare reports and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrences. * Develop and implement lessons learnt sessions, campaigns and improvement plans in agreement with existing procedure. Develop and implement HSEQ policies and procedures. Review and update polices as necessary to reflect changing regulations. Maintain records as necessary to ensure compliance with legislation, existing procedures and contract requirements. * Implement and control statutory and best practice processes and controls around working depots, including those relating to Fire, First Aid, Waste and others. * Design and deliver TBT, training programs for employees on HSEQ policies, procedures and best practices. Promote awareness of safety and environmental regulations. * Organise and oversee the induction process; ensuring everyone on the Contract has attended a project induction and is part of the BRAVE programme (Behavioural Safety Programme). * To help the company deliver its commitments and vision to sites to the appropriate standards, including ISO 9001,ISO14001, ISO 45001 and relevant NHSSs (objective to obtain within Y1) * Facilitate internal / external HSEQ audits. * Manage waste disposal processes, pollution prevention and other environmental initiatives, i.e. carbon counting. * Collect, analyse and report on HSEQ metrics and trends. Prepare reports for regulatory compliance. * Communicate sustainability issues and performance to site teams and senior management * Develop and implement emergency response plans. Conduct drills and training to prepare employees for potential emergencies. Skills & Experience: Essential * Have a solid professional background within Health, Safety, Environmental Management and Quality Management. * NEBOSH Certification or IOSH certification with at least 2 years of experience in an H&S role * Able to work on own initiative. * Be available and visible to all teams * Work together with colleagues and our client, and take the time to build effective relationships * Good organiser & the ability to prioritise. * Strong presentation skills * Creative. * Strong networking and relationship building skills. * Possess an appropriate qualification and have enough technical knowledge to be effective. * (CSP) Certified Safety Professional and NRSWA Street Works. Desirable * Knowledge of Management Systems and ISOs - specifically ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 * Experience of Accident, Incident and Non-Conformance investigations * Have an understanding of Health and Wellbeing, including Mental Health issues and Workplace Substance Management (D&A) issues * Knowledge of Quality Management Tools such as LEAN and others * Understanding of Key Performance Indicators and Strategic Performance Indicators and their role in Quality Management Personal characteristics * Good communicator (written & verbally) with clients, colleagues and the public. * Forward thinking, proactive and assertive.
