Book NowOnline session delivered by Chris Twinn on recent work on Ceiling Fans.
Cooling using ceiling fans is generally overlooked in the UK despite being ideal for addressing both climate change mitigation and adaptation. Our planning policies and building regulations do not include them as options. There is almost no technical guidance for quantifying how much cooling effect can be expected, how to specify them for procurement, and in turn, the technical performance the supply chain should deliver. As our climate warms, we should be learning from regions of the world that are already warmer. Hence, compared with mechanical cooling systems, installing ceiling fans is generally a fraction of the cost, a fraction of the energy bills, far less carbon emitting, with building occupants that readily understand and control them.
Chris Twinn has a background in building design, zero carbon and energy efficiency, delivered his first zero carbon development more than 25 years ago. He is a member of the EDGE think-tank, is on the Sustainable Development Foundation board, and previously served on the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard Governance Board and the LETI board. An Honorary Fellow of the RIBA, a Retrofit Academy Life Fellow, and a CIBSE Fellow, he has led on numerous publications, including ‘Retrofit-at-Scale’ for housing, ‘Understanding Non-Domestic Retrofit’ for the Retrofit Academy, and ‘Ceiling fans - Untapped cooling for a warming planet’ for CIBSE.
