Book NowAnnounced in 2015, Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel is now open—marking the most significant transformation of the city’s rail network in more than four decades
The project introduced a range of complex and unprecedented fire‑safety challenges that required innovative solutions throughout its delivery.
Furthermore, multiple fire engineers were involved in different roles across the project and in this session, we will hear a number of those perspectives.
Speakers
Geoff Flower, VIDA Metro, will discuss the client's perspective and some of the overall challenges of the project, including site constraints, infrastructure vs building, interfaces with adjoining buildings, standards baseline and need for progressive assurance.
Esteban Santacruz and Alfie Chapman, AAW Design Joint Venture, will discuss specific technical aspects of the fire engineering design, including fire modelling, evacuation modelling, structural fire resistance, smoke hazard management, as well as fire engineering inspections during construction.
Vas Subramaniam & Rahul Patel, Metro Trains Melbourne, discuss challenges from the Rail Transport Operator’s perspective, including maintainability of assets, impacts to train operations, the impact of fire safety controls on other rail safety risks and the role of the operator in emergency response.
