Book NowIn this CPD session, we will cover:
This two-part seminar explores delivering the first operational Net-Zero primary school in East Anglia, Lakenheath Community Primary School
Set in a unique location on the border of the Brecks and Fen landscape, Part 1 will cover an overview of the school project, which provides an adaptable, two-story facility for 420 primary and 30 pre-school pupils. Occupying a 3.2ha site, the L-shaped building is oriented to maximise natural light and minimise solar gain. The building also has to overcome the challenges of being located 1270 metres from RAF Lakenheath, the largest fighter base in the UK. This design therefore prioritises acoustic resilience through the use of mechanical ventilation and high-attenuation composite windows.
Biophilic design connects occupants to nature to improve concentration and well-being. The site promotes a pedestrian-first ethos, featuring inclusive access, sports pitches, and ecological zones with a 1:3 tree replacement ratio. Ultimately, the project creates an inspiring, future-proof environment that meets modern educational standards.
Part 2 will look at the details of the building services engineering:
Sustainability is a core pillar, targeting an ‘A+’ Energy Performance rating via an array of 20x150m boreholes for ground source heat pumps, 58kW photovoltaic panels and 40kW of modular battery storage.
Key integration of the commissioning, continuous commissioning and maintenance programmes will be integral to the performance monitoring of the building's continuous performance.
We will explore the school's desire to integrate all the features of the new school design with the educational curriculum.
