A case study and out forward a sizing and solution for a hot water leisure project, looking at capex/opex of various system types

In this CPD session, we will cover: a comprehensive case study on retrofitting heat pump systems into leisure sector buildings, specifically focusing on a leisure centre undergoing renovation to meet low Global Warming Potential (GWP) targets. The course goes beyond traditional design-and-build narratives by incorporating manufacturer and supplier perspectives, and comparing system options using detailed CCA (Comparative Cost Analysis) and SPF (Seasonal Performance Factor) methodologies.

1. Design Considerations for Heat Pump Retrofitting

  • Exploration of the design process from a manufacturer/supplier’s viewpoint.
  • Importance of transparency in building specifications and legacy system data.
  • How flexibility in recovery rates and installation space can lead to more tailored and effective system proposals.

2. Understanding Performance Metrics

  • Limitations of COP and SCOP in evaluating real-world system efficiency.
  • Introduction to SPF as a more holistic and accurate metric for assessing heat pump performance over time.
  • Why SPF is essential for clients to fully understand the operational and environmental impact of their systems.

3. CCA & SPF Analysis

  • Comparative analysis of various system options using CCA and SPF methodologies.
  • Use of analytical graphs and schematics to illustrate performance, cost, and carbon implications.
  • How proper system sizing and design can deliver a complete feasibility portfolio - covering technical, financial, and practical aspects.

4. Case Study: Leisure Centre Retrofit

  • Real-world application of heat pump retrofitting in a leisure centre.
  • Insights into the design solution, installation schematics, and final outcomes.
  • Demonstration of how SPF standardisation improves system understanding and supports long-term sustainability goals.
