CIBSE Ireland Student Competition 2025

The CIBSE Ireland Student and Young Engineers Network (YEN) are delighted to announce the Inaugural 2025 Seamus Homan Award - Innovation in Engineering. This competition celebrates creativity, technical excellence, and forward-thinking solutions that shape the future of the built environment. It provides a platform for students and YEN in Mechanical, Electrical and Sustainable Engineering disciplines to showcase innovative ideas that advance energy performance, sustainability, and smart building integration.

Inaugural 2025 Seamus Homan Award - Innovation in Engineering

Participants are invited to develop an innovative engineering concept, design, or prototype that demonstrates how emerging technologies and forward-thinking design can enhance building performance and occupant wellbeing. Projects should reflect a holistic approach to design, with a focus on:

  • Energy efficiency and decarbonisation
  • Sustainable design principles
  • Integration of renewable technologies
  • Digitalisation and smart building systems
  • User comfort, health, and wellbeing

Entries will be evaluated on the following:

  • Innovation & Creativity – originality and technical innovation of the concept.
  • Technical Excellence – sound engineering principles, design quality, and analysis.
  • Sustainability & Energy Impact – measurable contribution to reducing carbon emissions, energy use, or environmental impact.
  • Integration & Feasibility – how well mechanical, electrical, and digital systems work together in a practical solution.
  • Presentation & Communication – clarity, professionalism, and effectiveness of the overall submission.
  • Competition Launch: December 12th 2025
  • Submission Deadline: March 6th 2026
  • Winners Announced: March 27th 2026
  • Award Presented at CIBSE Ireland AGM: April 2026

The competition is open to: 

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Persons in their first 10 years of employment within the industry
  • All entrants must be current CIBSE Members and resident in Rep. Of Ireland. Student membership is free and we would encourage all to join for the multiple benefits around training and guides available.
  • Winner: €500 voucher
  • Runner-Up: €250 voucher.
  • Highly Commended: Certificate and publication on CIBSE Ireland platforms.
