SDE Member

Members develop solutions to engineering problems using new or existing technologies, through innovation, creativity and change and/or they may have technical accountability for complex systems with significant levels of risk.

Membership of SDE and registration of CEng can be achieved through MCIBSE membership, by choosing to select digital engineering as your engineering discipline.

It’s possible to gain MCIBSE through either an academic route, by holding approved qualifications or an experience route.

Fast-track routes to SDE membership are available for existing CIBSE Members and those registered as CEng with another UK engineering institution.

 

How to join

  • New applicants for MCIBSE MSDE: Follow the CIBSE guidance for your MCIBSE MSDE online application, the resources provided will support you through the full process. 
  • Current MCIBSE: fast-track route to SDE membership and post nominals. Upload your CV and CPD record for review by the SDE Membership Committee, If you have your documents ready start your application. This link will only work if you are already logged in and your membership is up to date.
  • Registered CEng: fast-track route to SDE membership and post nominals. Upload your CV, CPD record for review by the SDE Membership Committee along with proof of your registration with a UK engineering institution. If you have your documents ready start your application by creating a CIBSE account.

 

Subscription Fees

Applicable fees include CIBSE Member fee plus an additional £20 for SDE membership.

 

Eligibility criteria & routes to membership

For the academic route, you will need to meet one of the following criteria: 

  • An accredited integrated MEng degree.
  • An accredited Bachelors’ honours degree in engineering or technology with accredited Masters’ degree or Engineering Doctorate (EngD).
  • An accredited Bachelors’ honours degree in engineering or technology started prior to Sept 1999.
  • Washington Accord accredited Bachelors’ degree. (Further learning to Masters’ level is required from 2015 intake).
  • FEANI European Engineering Education Database (EEED) 2nd cycle degree qualification.
  • Individually assessed engineering/technology qualifications at the same academic level.

If you do not have the above qualifications, you can still gain this grade through the experience route by submitting the CEng Experience Template with your application.
