Special Interest Group Membership

CIBSE Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are formed to develop and promote building services engineering, encourage networking, and share knowledge.

Anyone with an interest in the group’s discipline can join, whether they are a CIBSE member or not.

You can register on the CIBSE website or update your account if you’re already registered. New members need to provide their name, job title, email, phone number, location, and consent for CIBSE to process their data.

SIGs are run by committees (groups of volunteers) but not all members of the group are committee members. See below for more information.

Group members are the heart of the SIG. They attend meetings, events, and the AGM to learn, share ideas, and network with others in the field. Members can suggest topics for events, ask questions, and volunteer for projects or working groups. While only CIBSE members can vote or stand for certain committee roles, all members help shape the group’s future by taking part, giving feedback, and supporting its activities.

A group member is anyone who has joined a CIBSE Special Interest Group (SIG) via their CIBSE profile because they are interested in the group’s topic. You don’t need to be a CIBSE member to join a group.

No, there are no compulsory tasks. You can be as active or as quiet as you like. The most important thing is that you find value in the group, whether that’s learning, networking, or contributing.

By being an active group member, you can:

  • Learn from experts and stay up-to-date with the latest developments.
  • Meet new people and expand your professional network.
  • Gain recognition for your knowledge and skills.
  • Influence the future of your profession by sharing your ideas.
  • Check your emails for group updates and event invitations.
  • Visit the group’s page on the CIBSE website.
  • Follow the group on social media if available.
  • Attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM) to hear about plans and progress.

Group members are encouraged to:

  • Attend events (webinars, seminars, workshops, and networking meetings).
  • Share knowledge and experience with other members.
  • Ask questions and join discussions at meetings and online.
  • Give feedback on group activities and suggest new ideas.
  • Help organise or speak at events if you have expertise on a particular subject.
  • Support the group’s goals by taking part in surveys, working groups, or projects.
  • Promote the group to colleagues and others who might be interested.

Sharing your knowledge with other members can be done via the list of contacts on this page.

If you want to do more, you can:

  • Volunteer to help at events or with group activities.
  • Share your knowledge by writing an article or giving a talk about your work or research.
  • Join a working group if the group has one.
  • Nominate yourself for the committee at the AGM.

Sharing your knowledge with other members can be done via the list of contacts on this page.
