Embodied carbon represents the emissions generated by the materials within a building. It is broken down into three key stages:

  • Upfront emissions: the carbon emissions arising from sourcing raw materials, transport, manufacturing, and constructing the building (including any wastage)
  • In-use emissions: the carbon emissions arising from cleaning, maintenance, and replacement, including any leakage of refrigerant
  • End-of-life: the carbon emissions associated with demolition/deconstruction and disposal of waste

The Sustainability Group has established an Embodied Carbon subcommittee. This subcommittee will advise the main Sustainability Group committee on matters related to embodied carbon to help meet the aims of the Group.

The members are as follows:

Chair: Joe Jack Williams
