Your experience as a volunteer is unique. Whether you’ve mentored a new engineer, organised a local event, or contributed to a technical committee, your personal journey can inspire others to get involved. That’s why we’re inviting you to share your story in your own words.
Why your story is important
Volunteering isn’t just about giving time; it’s about making a difference. Your story can:
- Humanise the impact of volunteering, beyond the role description.Facts and figures can tell us what volunteers do, but only personal stories can show us why it matters.
- Encourage others who might be hesitant to take the first step. By sharing how you overcame your own uncertainties or balanced volunteering with other commitments, you provide a roadmap for others.
- Celebrate the diversity of experiences within our community. Every volunteer brings a unique perspective, shaped by their background, skills, and experiences. Future volunteers will look back on your words as proof of the difference one person can make. You become part of a tradition of giving back, encouraging others to follow in your footsteps.
How to Share Your Story
We want to hear from you, in your own voice. Use “I” and “me” (this is your story, after all.) Write as you speak, and don’t worry about making it perfect. Aim for about one side of A4 (around 500 words), but feel free to be concise or elaborate as you wish.
Need a starting point?
If you’re unsure where to begin, here are a few questions to spark your thoughts:
- What motivated you to start volunteering?
- What’s been your most rewarding experience so far?
- How has volunteering shaped your professional or personal life?
- What would you say to someone considering volunteering for the first time?
