CIBSE is delighted to announce that Building Performance Reimagined, the Presidential theme of CIBSE’s 2024/25 President Fiona Cousins, has been featured as an in-depth case study in the newly published handbook by Singapore’s Centre for Strategic Futures (CSF), Thinking About Tomorrow: A Handbook for Strategic Foresight.

The handbook, which is open access and released under a Creative Commons licence, is designed to be shared, used and adapted widely. It articulates CSF’s updated understanding of strategic foresight - what is true in theory and useful in practice - drawing on both their own experience and insights from others.

Thinking About Tomorrow is structured around three sections:

  1. Foundations – explaining what foresight is, the value it brings, and the dispositions it requires.

  2. Forms – describing different kinds of foresight projects and providing practical examples.

  3. Footholds – offering heuristics and ideas for applying foresight in practice.

CIBSE is particularly proud that Building Performance Reimagined, a pioneering report commissioned by CIBSE and researched by Arup, (pp. 104–109) has been included, showcasing how a foresight-led project can shape the future of the built environment. The project reflects CIBSE’s commitment to exploring future building performance, decarbonisation and professional leadership in the sector.

The handbook is primarily written for public sector foresight practitioners, but its lessons and case studies are relevant to anyone seeking to understand how foresight can be applied in practice.
