16 January, 2026 — CIBSE has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Hydraulic Consultants Association of Australasia (HCAA), the Association of Hydraulic Services Consultants Australia (AHSCA) Queensland Chapter and the International Code Council (ICC). This collaboration will develop and deliver a new training course for hydraulic consultants and plumbing practitioners focused on sanitary drainage in unstable soils. The course will be offered both online and face-to-face, ensuring accessibility for professionals across Australia and New Zealand.

The initiative reflects a shared commitment to advancing technical expertise and promoting best practices in plumbing and hydraulic engineering by combining international standards expertise with regional industry knowledge, the training will provide practical guidance for practitioners working in challenging soil conditions.

CIBSE:
"CIBSE is proud to collaborate on this initiative, which bridges global standards with local expertise. The course will strengthen professional capacity and ensure that practitioners are equipped to meet the demands of modern infrastructure projects," said Mark Davie – CIBSE ANZ Chair.

HCAA:
"Hydraulic consultants are increasingly called upon to design systems in complex environments. This training program will provide practical tools and knowledge to help our members deliver safe and effective sanitary drainage solutions," said Derek Harris – HCAA President.

AHSCA QLD:
"AHSCA welcomes this opportunity to work with ICC and our industry partners. By focusing on unstable soils, we are addressing a critical issue for Australian practitioners and ensuring that solutions are both technically sound and practically applicable," said Ashley Monson – President AHSCA (QLD)

ICC:
"This partnership underscores the ICC’s mission to support safe, sustainable, and resilient communities worldwide. By working with building upon our existing partnerships with the HCAA, CIBSE, and AHSCA(QLD), we are ensuring that plumbing practitioners have access to training that addresses real-world challenges, such as unstable soils, while aligning with international best practices," said Tom Roberts, Global Director of PMG, International Code Council.

This training initiative represents a significant advancement for the plumbing and hydraulic consulting industry. Sanitary drainage in unstable soils presents complex technical and safety challenges, and equipping practitioners with specialised knowledge ensures that systems are designed and installed to the highest standards of resilience and reliability. By offering both online and face-to-face delivery, the program broadens access to critical expertise, supports professional development across diverse regions, and strengthens industry capacity to meet evolving infrastructure demands. Ultimately, the course will help safeguard communities, enhance compliance with international best practices, and foster innovation in hydraulic engineering.
